Does PKS works on SharePoint 2010 Beta?

Does any body installed or installing the PKS on SharePoint 2010 Beta?

I'm trying to configure PKS on SharePoint 2010 Beta (SQL Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 RTM).

Taken right from the front page of the PKS codeplex site:  "our recommendation is to not attempt to upgrade sites to SharePoint 2010 Beta where the PKS has been installed, as the upgrade will fail"

Hello JIMBUDDE,

Thank you very much for your reply.

I read the same...that  "PKS Site" upgrade from MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010 Beta will fail.

In my case I'm doing a fresh installation/ configuration of the PKS on the site collection created using publishing ( Or collaboration - team site) of SharePoint 2010 Beta (Off-course at the end the out put is same as upgrading the MOSS PKS Site to SP 2010 Beta ).  So wondering will it work or fails,  if it fails then what components will fails with in the PKS?  Can I upgrade these components into SP 2010 Beta and refer new API?  How complex it would be?

The short answer is: fairly complex, and no guarantee you'll ever get it to work without a fair amount of debugging.

After encountering my own issues installing on the Aug09 release on Win2008 R2, SQL 2008, and MOSS 2007, I gave up and went back to making sure I could install on Win2k3, SQL2008, and MOSS 2007.  I was never able to successfully install the podcasting kit in a win2008 R2 environment (after many days of debugging).  I expect most of the issues i ran into were security related but I did not have the time to spend countless hours debugging it.  Unless you want to spend even more time, I suggest you stick with Win2k3 and MOSS 2007 platform environment.

my two cents.

Hi

Even i am trying to deploy PKS on SP 2010 but not able to deploy it successfully.

I think we may need to update entire code using SP 2010 APIs and then try to deploy.

Also I do not recall but I came across a site in which they mentioned that Beta release dont have all features available, but I don't know whther it is tru or not but may be this is causing some problem :(

looking forward to find some solution :)

Thank you Jeff for posting your experience and I would like to hear more for you on PKS configuraiton on SP 2010 this may save some of my time and efforts.

So far I'm able to configure all the PKS's 9 Solutions on the SP 2010 Beta and configured all major features (24 in #) except the "Download Tracket" in the site as per the "August 2009 beta" installation guide.

I was unable to delete and create the "Podcast Files" column in the "PKS Podcasts" List as mentioned in the guid pg12 (configuring the podcast list - section).    (Jeff are you able to do this?)

I noticed the following error message in the 14-Hive logs.

Failed to create a control from assembly 'Microsoft.MSIT.DownloadTracker, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral,PublicKeyToken=039e36666027bfc6', class 'Microsoft.MSIT.DownloadTracker.PageControl':

-----

I check the GAC for the "'Microsoft.MSIT.DownloadTracker" assembly and did not see it so I uninstalled and installed the solution "microsoft.msit.downloadtracker.cab" after this I saw all the necessary dll's in GAC,  but the does not resolves the issue.

Let me know if any one have thoughts on this issue.

Regards - Vijay

Thanks JIM for you two cents,

Infact at the begning I faced similar kind of permission issue while adding the .ddl into GAC as well while using the STSADM to deplpoy/adding solution into sharepoint.  I disabled the UAC (User Access Control) on my windows login id (network id) and restarted the machine this allowed me to perform the above operation.

This link has more informaiton on how to disable user access conrtol in server 2008.

Hi Vijay

I was able to delete Podcast Files column and re create it as per documnetation.

Only this i observed is that for encoder servie to work correectly and generate thumbnail on windows server 2008 and 2008 R2 "Desktop Experiance" should be installed otherwise service doesnot work correctly on 2008 servers.

Also for ratng and download tracker feature activation ireceived message that these features are already activated, it seems that SP 2010 have inbuilt rating and download components which are some where related to PKS. We need confirmation on this part. but dont know whom to contact.

Are you able to make download tracker work at your end?

Jeff

Jeff,

I'm not able to make the "Download Tracker" work at my end.

Did you use publishing site collection Or Collaboration Team Site Collection?

I heard through the grape wine that Microsoft is evaluating on including the PKS features in SP 2010.
