How to install on multi-server farm

Oct 20, 2008 at 11:56 PM
Is there a set of instructions for doing an install on a multi-server farm?

Hi jtrigger, we haven't developed specific instructions for multi-server farm deployment as the approach is pretty much the same, and the generic recommendation for MOSS solution deployment on multiple servers apply.

As a rule of thumb, any action involving the central administration and sharepoint itself will need to be performed once, file manipulations or executable setup like installing silverlight 2, the MediaEncoder service or Expression Encoder will need to be performed on each web-front end.

What about the upload website for holding the podcast files?  Is there anything special that needs to be done with that?  Anything special that needs to be set for the server side re-encoding if using a farm with multiple servers?  Has this been setup on a multi-server farm for tests?  Just want to make sure there are no hidden gotchas anywhere.

Great questions... some of the answers depend on your deployment preference/strategy.

Podcast file storage, on each web server you can either point to:
- a SAN location or
- a local disk. In this case you should use DFRS (windows server file distribution/replication mechanism) to synchonize all front-end

Server-side re-encoding:
- check out this discussion thread, it talks about MediaEncoder deployment options http://www.codeplex.com/pks/Thread/View.aspx?ThreadId=37860

Last recommendation: you should deploy at the root of the site collection.

Yes we have tested it in a multi-server farm environment. Good luck in your deployment, we're here to help you along the way if you hit any roadblocks!
